This was my first 5k I have done since the trail one I ran when we went to Italy in 2011. The last short race we did was the Running of the Green 7k in 2012. Sean and I were both a little nervous about doing a 5k because our training has definitely not been focused on speed or road and 5k road runs are run blistering fast.
This run was put on by our church (Red Rocks http://www.redrockschurch.com) and Colorado Christian University to raise money for Activ8 which benefits a wide variety of underprivileged children and adults. It was a small race (300 people) which was super close to home.
Luckily, we both still had a couple fast twitch muscle fibers left and we had a good day. We both felt good and ran better than we thought we could. Sean ran 17:56 and I ran 19:42. Sean ended up finishing as the 3rd male (3rd overall) and I finished as the 2nd female.
After finishing the race we drove home to get the boys and their friends to bring them back so they could jump in the bouncy castle and play some lawn games with us and to do the fun run if they wanted. Mako and one of his friends decided to do the kids fun run which was about a mile.
We had a fun time and won some gift certificates to Runner's Roost.
